Then again, we've also seen Sony go all-in on certain things (cough, 3DTV, cough) only to dump those ideas a year or so later.Īnd keep this in mind, too: Consoles, period, are rarely meant to have longevity past 10 years.Flixster is the best service and app for all movie lovers and people who want to stay updated with the latest news from the world of cinema. The PS4 seems a bit more grounded, a bit more what-you-see-is-what-you-get, but a Gakai-based cloud streaming service will eventually be up and running, offering more potential. Thus Microsoft's future is bright but unsure, much like Sony's. Remember the struggles of Nintendo TVii? Don't assume this one's brilliant yet, either, especially since I was told it's in its "very early" stages. And the NFL app, which promises to keep you updated on your fantasy team's performances, hasn't been battle-tested yet. Developers may not embrace the cloud, for fear of crashes, or fear for gamers playing offline. The potential for vast Elder Scrolls universes certainly exists. While each Xbox One unit is brimming with power, Microsoft also hopes to tap into cloud processing, with games potentially off-loading much of the workload to the cloud and refreshing heavily to create larger worlds for gamers. Meanwhile, Microsoft's connection to the cloud, while horrifically annoying, brings with it unlimited potential. We're all enjoying second-screen experiences these days, and Microsoft smartly gives you two on one big screen. Or maybe you're watching TV and surfing the Web. Or maybe you're playing a game with a YouTube walkthrough video up alongside it. The most appealing idea now is that you can "snap" two apps onto your big screen, perhaps playing a game on one screen, with a TV show open on the other. The Xbox One certainly offers a lot for the casual user, and it's brimming with potential - with NFL apps that track fantasy football and other such general multimedia capabilities. At the moment, the Kinect has settled in as a fringe tool, and the PS4's touchpad is the unknown quantity.Īttendees photograph the new Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) at E3. It was done effectively in Mass Effect 3, but few other games have been successful. Then again, the integration of the Kinect into mainstream gaming has long been tricky. Sony's Kinect equivalent, the PlayStation Eye, however, seems slightly more limited, still sensing the PS4 controller's motion – not your own. Sony also fixes those annoyingly squishy triggers, replacing them with more responsive ones, and, other than that, it doesn't mess with a good thing. The upgraded motion controls are also impressive, so much so that you can easily play through DriveClub using the new DualShock as a steering wheel. Few games know how to use this right now, but it could easily serve as a way to navigate inventories in shooters, or perhaps form the basis of some interesting minigames in traditional action games. The PS4 controller counters quickly, with an innovation that may have an even higher ceiling, a tiny capacitive touchpad in the center of the controller. Yes, that means you can still cheat with your scapula on pushups, although a tech did tell me that developers can track far more if they choose to write deeper code). In one tech demo, it was apparent that the system still "cheats" a bit, essentially guessing where hidden bodyparts are. (Fitness gamers, don't get too excited, though. Microsoft is hoping developers use the New Kinect in more gameplay situations, perhaps letting you strafe with shoulder-shakes in shooters or turn nightvision on and off by tapping your own head. The New Kinect truly does sense your body far more accurately, and while its heart rate monitor wasn't flawless, I was impressed. The most notable of these is its four rumble engines, which make everything from gunfire to helicopter rotors feel far more potent.Īdd in the New Kinect's functionality, and you have a potent control set. The One unit feels perfect in your hands, and it's full of smart, subtle innovations. Microsoft messed around – a lot – with its Xbox One controller, and the results are impressive. And get ready for some comfy controllers.
